Help! What is the oozy green poo? Baby Ball Python not moving.?
5 hours ago my son's Baby Ball appeared sick. We've had for two weeks and tried to feed frozen fuzzy's. It's in a 40 gal. tank with wood chips, lamp, temp is just above 80, although when we put the therm. under the lamp it reads closer to 95. It made a mess with the oozy green poo and just seems lethargic. We put in a warm bath, and then under the lamp and it started moving again. We tried feeding it a fuzzy again with no success so we put back under the lamp, and now it is really not moving. It seems dead. What is the green oozy poo? and what do we do?
Ball Pythons have a couple different types of waste: fecal matter which should be firm and resemble cat feces, and urates/urine from their kidneys. The urine is liquid and the urates are usually a white chalky substance but the color can vary from green to brown.
If your snake isn't moving around much, doesn't ball up, strike or hiss... it could be very sick. Most pet stores will sell captive hatched Ball Pythons from Africa, and many are not treated for various illnesses, diseases, or parasites. It could be that your snake has a parasite or disease and is in need of veterinary care if it's not too late.
Unfortunately if it is too late, I would highly suggest that you research the care of these snakes before getting another one. A 40 gallon tank is much too large for a baby Ball as they will get stressed easily in large enclosures and will refuse to eat. Also, the temps should be consistent and your snake should have two small, compact hides to feel comfortable in each temperature zone of the cage. The temps should be from the low 80s to the low 90s 24 hours a day.
