How do I grow these carnivorous plants from seeds?

I'm growing a Venus Fly trap, a sundew, and some cobra lillies, i understand that they need a dormant period. what happens if this is provided? they will be grown in one of those Carnivorous Plant Terrarium kits. What tips can you give me for care and germination? does it matter when i plant the seeds?

The sundew and cobra lily seeds need to be cold stratified. You can do this by putting them in moist paper towels and then putting them in the refrigerator in a plastic baggie for 4 weeks.

The Venus Fly Trap seed you should plant immediately. If the seed is still viable, you should see seedlings starting to grow in 3 to 6 weeks.

You don't need to worry about dormancy for the seedlings until next winter. Next winter, just let them enter dormancy naturally by leaving them outside all summer and fall until the temperatures get near freezing. Then move them to a protected location like a garage or an unheated porch.

I'd like to warn you about a couple of things. Firstly, it's likely that you won't have much germination with a seed kit. The seeds have probably been sitting on a shelf for a very long time and have lost their viability.

Secondly, even if they do germinate, it can take carnivorous plants up to 5 years to reach maturity. The Cobra Lily and Venus Fly Traps are VERY slow growers. The sundew plants grow a little faster. You'll probably have pretty good sized sundew plants in a year or so if the seed germinates. It will take at least 3 years before the Venus Fly trap and Cobra lily seedlings reach adulthood, and probably closer to 5 years.

While you're growing the seedlings, I'd recommend purchasing a couple of adult plants for your enjoyment.
