Ball Python heating requirements?
I have never owned a snake before, and I am going to get a ball python tomorrow. I am making its cage myself. The bottom of the cage is 1/2 in thick plywood sealed with a coat of rubber sealant. I bought a 24 watt Under Tank heating pad, but I am concerned that it might not get enough heat into the terrarium if placed underneath. should I also buy heat lamps, or perhaps modify the tank somehow to let the heat in? any suggestions are very appreciated.
The heat pad should heat though fine. You may require an additional heat source as a lamp so I would buy one to at least have on hand. Before you put your snake in the cage, you need to let the cage set with the heat on until there are no more fumes(this could be weeks). The fumes are toxic. This applies to all sealers, paints, and adhesives used for building the cage. Because of this you will need a temporary housing, plastic storage containers work well.

So i would never recommend putting a heat source next to wood…ever built a fire before? Thats step 1. As was already stated, you should check the sealant for toxicity as well as the type of plywood (please tell me it isn’t pressure treated). I’m assuming you used glass for the walls, in which case you should have attached the Heating Pad to the side of the wall where your warmer side will be. This will still transmit the same amount of heat, it will just eminate from the walls instead of the floor.
