Snakes – Brilliant Creatures Belonging To The Rough Outdoors

by Jessica Corning on November 3, 2010

Snakes are oftentimes linked to death and evil doings. In movies, large snakes are depicted as vicious creatures feeding on human flesh. They instill in the minds of the people that large snakes hunt and treat people as their prey. Contrary to what is shown in the movies, large snakes do not hunt humans. Most of the time, they prefer to stay away from humans and enjoy their solitude.

One of the large species of snake noted in the world are the African rock python, Burmese python, reticulated python and Anaconda.

The third largest snake in the world is the African rock python. It grows up to 30 feet and can weigh 250 lbs. Brown spots outlined with black cover its whole body. They remain dormant and do not eat during dry season. African rock python can eat an animal as big as an antelope if hungry. An African rock python can lay as many as 1000 eggs and incubated them for 2-3 months. The hatchlings are 18-24 inches and they live up to 30 years. They eat and hunt alone.

The Burmese python is one of the species of large snakes in the world. It is also the top choice of pet owners who want to have a giant animal as pet. However, the Burmese python is often abandoned by its owner in the long run because it can grow up to 23 feet, weigh 200 lbs. and their girth as big as telephone pole. This size is more than a single person can handle. Burmese python hunts its prey using heat sensors along their jaws and chemical receptors in their tongue. They feed on mammals and birds. Oftentimes, Burmese pythons are hunted for their skin, which is used to make bags and shoes, making the Burmese python one of the endangered species in the world.

Reticulated python is considered as the longest snake in the world for it can grow up to 34 feet. It has a slender body and is rarely found in places away from fresh water. Reticulated python can grow to an average length of 10- 20 feet. They live in the coast of Southeast Asia. Some types of Reticulated python are: Albino, Ambom Yellowhead, Axanthic, Borneo Bateater, Calico, Calico Tiger, Dwarf, Granite Backed, Jungle, Silver and Sulawesi. Reticulated pythons, contrary to most pythons, are irritable and defensive.

Anacondas are also one of the large species of snakes in the world. They are native in South America. Its size enables it to win the title "king." Anaconda can grow to an average of 17 feet, however, it can grow as large as 28 feet and can weigh as heavy as 215 lbs. Anacondas can grow huge that they prefer living in water to support their weight.

The above mentioned snakes are only a few of the species of large snakes in the world. In reality, pythons hide when they sense humans approaching. It is only in very rare situations, such as when they are not properly fed and they are hungry and irritated, that they attack human beings. Snakes, with their characteristics, suggest that you can look at them, but you can never touch.
