Is my under Tank Heater working?

I'm going to be getting a corn snake in a few weeks, so I'm buying all the supplies now and setting up the tank to be sure everything works okay.

I bought a ReptiTherm UTH and put it on the bottom of the tank on Tuesday. Today (Thursday), the cage carpet is kind of warm, but the air temp above the UTH is only 73 (The thermometer is stuck on the inside tank wall, almost touching the floor). I think the air temp on the hot side is supposed to be 80-85. When I touch the glass on the tank bottom, it feels pretty hot, so does it just take a long time for the heat to get through the carpet and start warming the air? Or is the UTH not working? Thanks!

If you want to try to heat the air, you could try attaching the UTH to the side of your tank and see if that works. But like others have said, it heats the floor, not the air. If the carpet is warm to the touch it's doing its job. However, if you'd like to heat the air, and putting the UTH on the side doesn't work, I would suggest getting heat lamps.
