Taking care of a Leopard Gecko...?
Alright so Im getting a Leopard Gecko and Ive already got his habitat all ready for him. I just want to make sure everything is alright.
Its a 10g tank, at least for now.
I have a Basking Spot under the light on one end.
(the light with a white 60w basking bulb in it.)
*Should I use a red or white bulb?
*And can I just turn the light off at night (because my room is naturally warm).
And a moss lined moist hiding place on the other end.
Plus the habitat has Reptile Carpet and a shallow water dish.
I will be feeding him crickets with the proper nutrients.
Any feedback or tips would be great.
I didnt want to get him a under Tank Heater or heat rock because I heard bad things.
*Is the light enough?
I think leopard geckos are the best. here is my OWN caresheet, not one i copied off from the internet. This also includes my experiences.
A leopard gecko..... they grow to about 10 inches. 10 gallons for each leopard gecko. Never use sand or bark as substrate no matter what anyone tells you about how safe it is. Mine died from sand:( They need a temperature gradient. coool end should be 80 degrees and warm end should be 90 degrees. They need a undertank heater to help aid in digestion. They will also need a source of heat whether a lightbulb or ceramac heater. An undertank heater is not enough heat for a leopard gecko. Leave the light on for 12 hours a day. Undertank heaters can be left on everyday 24/7. For substrate you can use paper towels or newspapers, They need a dish of water and needs to be changed everyday. They also need a humid hide for shedding. To make a humid hide. get any plastic box and cut a hole in it for the entrance, Place moss in it and wet it everyday. This will help them to shed. If they do not shed, this will cause many problems. If there is leftover skin. Put it in a shallow box of water let it soak for 25 minutes and use a q-tip to rub the skin off. This sounds really gross, hard and annoying, but it really isn't hard or gross. Leopard geckos do not need uvb and uv light so don't even bother. They do need calcium and vitamins however. Dust the insects with vitamin every other day and use calcium on wekkends. This is what i do.
You should feed your leopard gecko many different insects and vary their diets because feeding them one thing is not enough for them . You can also place a dish of calcium so they can eat it whenever they need it. Provide hiding places for it because they are nocturnal and the light bothers them. Scoop out any poop you see.
My favorite leoaprd geko type is sunglows and high yellow leaprd geckos. The sunglows are usually 100 dollars while high yellows are 30-50 dollars.
cages cost anywhere from 30 dollars to 100 and up depending on the size. the vitamins and calcium cost 20-30 dollars. insects cost about 10 dollars every week. leopard geckos cost from 20-100 and up dollars depending on type and size. substrates cost priceless because of paper... heaters and heat sources cost from 50-100 dollars hope this helps.
