Bearded Dragon Lighting.?
I recently got a bearded dragon Ive been kinda confused on the lighting he is still kinda small about 6 inches long and in a terrarium that is about 18 inches tall and 18x18 wide i have going across the top a SU Reptile Slimline Light Fixture with 18 Super UV Lamp and in the back corner that his plant runs up to but not to close a infra red heat light but you can really tell its red with the other light blending in i was wondering if this is ok the. The corner with the red light is hotter than the rest.
Your lighting could use a little work. First off, red lights are meant for nocturnal animals, not ones active in the day like Bearded Dragons. For Beardies, you want a bright white light for the basking light. You can get this with a normal household bulb.
As for the UVB light, that isn't a very good one either. It just doesn't have much of an output of UVB. It would be a good idea to replace it with one of the following fluorescent UVB bulbs: The Reptisun 10.0, the Arcadia D3 + 12%, the Reptisun 5.0, or the Reptiglo 8.0. Those are really the only good fluorescents on the market. I wouldn't go with compacts, because they tend to stop producing UVB after 1-2 months and many are causing eye problems. When you get the new UVB light, it would be a good idea to buy online, where you can get it for 1/2 the price for pet stores. petmountain.com, llreptiles.com, and bigappleherp.com all have at least one of those lights, probably more, for reasonable prices.
