Miniature Terrarium
how would you explain this poem?

they were lovevly in teh quartz and jasper sand
as if they had created terrariums with their bodies
on purpose; adding sprigs of seaweed, seashells,
white feathers, eel bones, miniature
Mussels, a fish jaw. Hundreds; no--
Thougsands of baby stars. We touched them,
Surprised to find them soft, pliant, almost
Living intheir attitudes. We would dry them, arrange them,
Form seascapes, geodesics...We gathered what we could
In teh approaching darkness. Then we left hundreds of
Thousans of flawless five-fingered specimens sprawled
Along the beach as far as we could see, all massed
Together: little martyrs, soldiers, artless suicides
In lifelong liberation from teh sea. So many
Splayed hands, the tide shoveled in
Its called Starfish by Lorna Dee Cervantes
Also do you think this is the theme of it: Always respect fragile things like starfish

and do you think the speaker of this poem is the author or anybody?

it is a nice poem, surely. but i do not think that the respect of fragile life is the theme, but more the beauty of life, even in death. the starfish are no longer alive, but are still beautiful. that is the view i take from it. however, poems are meant to be interpreted by the reader, and every reader is different.
