by Casey Watkins on October 5, 2010

Leopard geckos, Eublepharis macularius, are popular in the pet trade due to their wide variation of color patterns commonly the yellow and white with black spots. These nocturnal type of lizards are natives in Southern Central Asia. Leopard geckos are commonly compared to their look-alike, the fat-tailed geckos.

Leopard geckos have the average size of 8 or 9 inches long and can live for up to 20 years or more. They are ground dwellers and unlike other geckos, they don't have the specialized scales in their toes which unable them to climb upside down. What they have are eyelids which, of course, are not common to some geckos.

As far as I know, there are a lots of people who are interested in having a pet, specially the leopard geckos. If you are one among those people, then you better know what are their basic needs and some information about them.

Before proceeding on buying, you should consider on selecting a leopard gecko which is in good condition. After then, you may proceed on providing your new pet an enclosure. The housing must be appropriate in size of your pet so that the gecko can roam around and do its normal exercise. A 15-20 gallon tank can accommodate 3 geckos. As for the substrate, it is preferable if you use sand for a natural habitat look, though you may also use paper towels. Additional decoratives can be given in terms of logs and rocks. Hiding areas must be putted inside the enclosure also so that your the geckos can have some place for sleeping. The temperature must be maintained also for 88F during the day and 75F during the night. UVB with full spectrum light is also essential which must be turned on for at least 10-12 hours in daily manner. With regards to their diet, they are best fed with insects since they are insectivores. Gut-loaded crickets, mealworms and wax worms will do. Geckos require 2 dietary supplement also, first is calcium supplements which must be given in regular feeding while the multivitamin supplement at least once or twice a week. On the other hand,a shallow dish will do when providing water for your pet. The water in the dish must be changed regularly. For safety precaution also, wash your hands before and after touching your pet to avoid salmonella or any types of disease. In addition, you must clean the enclosure at least once a week. Keep watching for your pet's condition to avoid any serious health conflicts

Pets are indeed so great to have in our life, but it is also a huge responsibility that might take effect on lifetime. Never ever decide on buying some exotic pet just for fun. Think it over and over again if you can comply all the requirements of being an exotic pet owner.
