would this work for a turtle Egg Incubator???

first a styrofoam box filled with abit of water and a submersable heater in the water set to around 30 degrees celcius. then in the middle of the water either a small tank or an ice-cream container filled with warm, damp potting soil mixed with washed sand, the eggs will go in the soil and be covered except for the tip of the egg so there is abit of white showing..
is this suitable? i wil cover the whole box but should i also cover the smaller container inside??
thanks any help would be great

You don't need to get that complicated. My first attempt to hatch turtle eggs was red eared sliders. I set up an incubator very similar to what you describe. My eggs all died and molded. I tried several more times with map turtle eggs and South American Wood turtles without success. Then I was given some snapping turtle eggs that had been found in a pile of mulch that was being spread. My incubator was full so I put the eggs in a plastic tub with about 2 inches of moist vermiculite in it.The eggs were only half covered (burying them more makes monitoring there condition difficult). Then I put the covered tub in a warm (65 to 75) room. I had 33 eggs. Two hatched prematurely and died three did not hatch and twenty-eight hatched normally. I gave two away released 25 and I still have the last one. He will be seven in Aug. Since then I have hatched several more clutches. Vermiculite works better than potting soil (maintains moisture level better), turtle eggs naturally develop with a night-day temperature variation and summer temps mean that you don't need additional heat. Mark the top of each egg with a felt tip marker so you can be sure that they are not turned. Ventilated plastic shoe or sweater boxes make excellent hatching containers. E-mail me if you have more questions Good luck with your eggs.
