If my python's vivarium has an under-tank Heating Pad, do I still need a heat lamp?
I read on several webpages that ball pythons need basking spots, but then I spoke with a hobbiest who said the heating pad would provide enough heat. If I also need the heat lamp, what wattage bulb should I use?
It's in a 20 gallon long aquarium.
ball pythons don't need basking spots they are nocturnal. but a little extra heat that can be moved around is advisable. buy a ceramic Heat Emitter. it screws into a lamp base like a regular light bulb but does not emit any light. you can move it around unlike an undertank heating pad. also you MUST have a Digital Thermometer with a probe to measure the temps in the hide on the warm side of the tank. you also need a dimmer switch or a Temperature Controller to make sure you don't overheat your snake and kill it. a good fluorescent light for daytime use is advisable, because your snake needs a light/dark cycle and a fluorescent does not give off much heat. go to www.kingsnake.com for the best info Ceramic Heat Emitter should be 60-100 watts
