Enclosures For Green Iguanas – Building Custom Reptile Cages

by Kelly de Borda on June 24, 2010

If you're interested in building a large Reptile Cage for your iguana, first look around your house for an appropriate spot. For an adult iguana, you'll need a large space, so you may need to use part of a guest room or garage. For juvenile to mid size iguanas, an unused closet in your house can be a perfect solution.

Iguanas must have a cage that gives them plenty of space to move around without restriction, and the structure also needs to be tall enough for them to climb. The cage needs to be 1-1/2 times as long as the iguana, at minimum, and deep enough for the iguana to turn around comfortably. Adult green iguanas will also need a structure that is at least 6 feet tall, with plenty of space for climbing. You'll also need to be sure that the home is properly maintained for both humidity levels and temperature, and of course, it will need to be escape-proof.

For younger iguanas, it's comparatively easy to cover a closet for use as an enclosure. Taking off the doors allows you put a screen or Plexiglas cover over the front. Of course, if you use Plexiglas, you'll want to make sure that you allow for plenty of ventilation so as to avoid problems with overheating. Variables like temperature and humidity are easier to control in an enclosed spot like a closet, and the area over the rod can be closed off with screen to provide a spot for the UV and basking lights.

On the other hand, you may want to consider an outside habitat if your iguana is very large. Iguanas can live quite comfortably outside in warm climates, but they must have an indoor area where they can be protected from cool weather. You may be able to keep them outside when it's warm if you have a place to put them inside during the cooler months. Since iguanas need to receive UV rays for their health, an outdoor habitat has the distinct advantage of allowing them to bask in natural sunlight.

These ideas for large Reptile Cages are just a few of the possible solutions for bigger lizards. There are plenty of ways you can customize your pet's habitat to make it more comfortable. Use your imagination, and remember that the proper enclosure will help your pet live a healthier and longer life.
