Ask just about any boy or girl if he or she would like a pet and you will usually get a resounding 'yes' for an answer. Kids have a knack for adopting all kinds of creatures. It goes without saying that cats and dogs rank as top choices for pets. Also right up there are goldfish, hamsters and gerbils. Well, along with these obvious picks is the Bearded Dragon. This critter loves to be around people and always gets the description of 'cool.'
A lot of people may not be thrilled with the idea of having a pet lizard. But, of course these kinds of dragons are not the kind that spit fire and haunt dungeons. His official name is pogona and he hails from the rocky and dry woodlands in Australia. And the best part is he has a great personality.
A pogona likes to hang out on branches and is a very skilled climber. They are omnivores. This means that their diet consists of both plant and animal. So, you can feed them roaches, crickets and worms along with grated carrots, broccoli and escarole. One food item that is not good for a pogona is lettuce as it can cause dehydration. Citrus fruit is not good for them either.
An annoyed bearded dragon will show his awesome spiny neck scales. Luckily he will not do this to his owner. This display is for the times when it feels threatened.
As hinted at earlier, the pogona is a sociable buddy. As youngsters they are quite active but also friendly. As adults, they are not quite so active but do still like to be around people. What's more, they can remain your companion for up to 10 years. Average life span is 5-8.
The thought of a reptilian pet is enough to make many people cringe. A bearded dragon can put that uneasiness to rest. He is an unpretentious pet that will love his owner.

They’re easy to breed and have a long lifespan, they don’t smell or jump. I have a colony I started in Jan and it has proven to be a great inexpensive way to cut feeding cost.
